Just another WordPress.com weblog

Hi hi hello! February 6, 2010

Hey! This is a little late! But here goes anyways…

Last week we had a movie session with the girls..watching Princess Diaries (One of my all-time favourites!) in one of the rooms..I think there were about 20 of us altogether in the room. I actually thought the girls would be thrilled to be able to watch a movie..but I guess sometimes when there’s company, you tend to prefer being able to talk with your friends, as well as with us, the volunteers, since we only get to see them once a week. So interestingly enough, the girl I was assigned to, and a few of her close friends became pretty restless about 20 minutes into the movie session.

So mostly we ended up talking, about what happened in the past week, and things like that. I guess sometimes even movies can’t beat a good and simple conversation??

Till the next post…ciao!

Sorry didn’t realize I was supposed to blog last week! Haha, so here’s a late entry. Last week was movie session but ‘cos the room could only hold 20 people and they were considering not letting some girls down,so me and geraldine decided to sacrifice ourselves (kidding, I actually watched the movie before and I knew my girl was into horror movies lol) and we had a normal session instead.  Played Bingo (the 7 by 7 kind! and a single round lasted so long….), Pictionary, whatever game we could think of with the materials on hand and finally ended up drawing random pictures(they drew doraemon and spongebob for us!) and just talking. Overall, it was still a fun session! Happy CNY in advance!

Movie Mania! February 5, 2010

Last Saturday, for the first time ever, we got to watch a movie with the girls!  The Blk C girls were given Princess Diaries and Blk A was given A Bug’s Life. It was an interesting experience because during the first half and hour of the movie watching session, the girls were not interested to watch the movie and were engaging in a conversation with their volunteers. I think this comes to show that the girls really like talking to us and i think they found it a waste to stay quiet to watch the movie. Also perhaps, some of them might not like the movie per se. I think next time, before we have another movie session, we should have a poll on the movie the girls would like to watch! Oh and volunteers, if you have any ORIGINAL DVDVCD that you think the girls would enjoy, let me know! ((:

Its a little late for my first entry January 27, 2010

Sorry guys, i totally forgot about blogging my experience.

The first session with the girls was fun and i had a chatty session with my mentee. I have a better understanding of her background, hobbies and what she likes and hates about. I was quite nervous initially as  i was afraid that i might say something that would have offend or upset her. She has a lot to talk and her willingness to share about herself  break the ice between both of us. We played UNO for a while before we ended the session. I truely enjoyed the first session and i’m looking forward to future sessions with her =)

Hey! It’s my first time blogging here too. Haha it’s a little late in the night and tomorrow will be the second session I’ve spent at the Girls’ Home. I must say last Saturday’s experience was definitely…hmm..different from anything I’ve ever expected. I think I was stereotyping when I thought these girls would be worlds apart in their interests from mine. But the girl that I was assigned too has so much in common with me, we both love poetry, words, the arts and music. It was so weird, kind of like seeing a younger version of myself from years back. I can tell that she’s not really showing her true self at times, but I guess that’s to be expected, it’s the first time we’re meeting! Still, it’s been an enriching first session, wonder what tomorrow’s session will be like! :]

Hi Hi everyone….

This is my first time blogging.Haha.

Well…Last Saturday was my first visit to the Singapore Girls home. It’s a new experience for me as I had never done any volunteering activities involving youths. I was excited but also feeling a bit nervous while meeting my 2 girls. I was afraid that they may not open up to me or I may have difficulty communicating with them. Haha. But to my surprise, my girls and I actually hit off quite well. They are friendly and humorous. I also get to know that they enjoy channel 8 drama a lot even though mandarin is not their mother tongue language. Of course there were times where we have no topics to talk of and we are just staring and smiling at each other. Then we started playing UNO which eliminates the awkwardness. But on a whole, I enjoyed my first session with them. Hope that my sessions with my girls will continue to be fun.

Looking forward to the next session on sat:)

HEY!!!!!!!!

Call me noob, I used 10 mins to figure out how to use a wordpress. hahahahha…. Well, it’s the third year going for volunteering at Youth Girls’. That’s not very long, nor is it very short. These few years, I learnt loads of stuff. Of course, it includes how to talk crap~~~(Elynda, you’ll be a master of this if you continue volunteering! ) hahahahhaa…  BUT volunteering at the Girls Home is so much more than just learning how to talk crap. It’s also about building relationships, having fun, opening your <3 to others and living life to the fullest! What’s life without girls’ talk? You get a dose of it at Youth Girls, every saturday, 3 to 5pm, rain or shine. (I sound like I’m advertising~~~) Well, I joined Girls Home with little expectations, I joined, because my friend joined. These 3 years, there’s ups and downs, sometimes, the girls disappoint, sometimes, you disappoint yourself and sometimes, the admin just gets you down. BUT I stayed on, and I’m glad I did. I want to do this till my teeth all drop off, if the girls don’t mind a crazy old woman as a volunteer hahahahahahhaha…….

XOXO Geraldine (how do you publish this thing?!)

Haha Geraldine, you’re a joker! :P Anyway, it’s my turn to write an entry! Hmmm the first Girl’s home session for 2010 started on a fabulous note! We had our first talk (some already had several) with our girl(s). For me, it has been heartwarming walk this journey with my previous girl, and seeing her being discharged and finally knowing what she wants to do in life. In last week’s session, my new girl wrote me a card saying how she hopes I will come every Saturday. It feels nice to know that you can make a difference in someone’s life in a positive way! :)

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus! December 21, 2009

Heyyyy

Just last week, Maryam and i volunteered for the Annual Blk D Boys’ Home Camp! And it was AMAZING! We really had loads of fun with the Blk D Volunteers and the boys.

It wasn’t my first time dealing with Youths from a Home since i have been a volunteer with the Girls’ Home for a year now, but i guess it was still different since i have been dealing with girls and during the camp, i had to interact with the boys. The boys opened up to me faster than the girls at the girls’ home did. Probably it was easier for the boys to open up to the female volunteers since they might feel that we are able to listen to them more (being females. Heh.) But what’s similar and essential is that one will need to earn that precious TRUST and from then on, it’ll be easy to bond and communicate with these youths. Thanks Khalisah for giving us this opportunity to be part of the camp! (:

I can’t wait for sessions to start. For all the Girls’ Home volunteers, please be reminded that a COMPULSARY briefing will be conducted on the 2nd of January 2009 at the Girls’ Home! (: More details will be given closer to the date! (:

Merry Christmas in advance to those celabrating!

Happy Holidays! ((:
